Buff tailed bumblebee queen on Wild Plum blossom. Queens, males & workers all have two bands of yellow, though tail colour differs. The male can be mistaken for a white-tailed bee, the bands of the latter are more a lemon yellow & the buff tail usually has a thin buff band.
In the warmer parts of the UK, fully active winter colonies of this species are regularly recorded, even when temperatures are close to freezing and there is snow on the ground! You can help them by planting Aconite or other winter-flowering plant species.
