Buff-tailed Bumblebees on Teasel flower head. The teasel flower head was a wonderfully sculptural backdrop for these small bees industriously harvesting the pollen. They only have short tongues, so prefer open, daisy like flowers.
However, they are known as ‘nectar robbers’: if they come across a flower that is too deep for their tongue, they bite a hole at its base and suck out the nectar. The queen has a buff tail, whereas workers & males have a white tail, with a thin buff line above. While other bees may hibernate October to May, the Buff tailed bumblebees can be active over winter! You can support them by planting winter-flowering plant species, such as Aconite, Mahonia & more.
