Garden Bumblebee male on everlasting sweet pea. The plant had seeded itself in the crack between 2 paving stones in front of the house but I left it over the summer for the bees. Certain flowers seem to cause the bees to ‘hum’ in a higher pitch & this is one of them – the bee sounded delighted as it moved from lower to flower.
These large bumblebees have a long face & tongue - in fact the longest tongue of all our bumble bees. It can stretch up to 2cm, which is as long as its own body! This means it can reach right inside flowers like Foxgloves, Cowslips & other tubular flowers.
