Red tailed bumblebee queen on wisteria. These bumblebees have comparatively short tongues and the difference in size between castes is notable. Some early workers are no bigger than a house fly. Their crimson tail fades quickly in sunlight, so the queen & workers, both black in colour, may have an orange tail. The male's tail can appear yellow or even white in worn specimens.
Males also have yellow facial hair and bright yellow bands at the front and rear of the thorax. In studies these bees appear able to forage at higher temperatures than other bees.
