We were lucky enough to watch this great spotted woodpecker grow up. His parents visited in the winter for fat balls and they brought their fledgling to us in the late spring.
Over the summer we watched the red cap on this young bird slip backwards as he grew up. Adult males have a small patch of red at the back of their necks, whilst the adult females have no red on their head or neck.
