Greater Spotted Woodpecker juvenile. We were lucky enough to watch this youngster grow up. His parents visited in the winter, for fat balls, and they brought the baby to us in the spring.
Over the summer we watched the red on the top of his head ‘slip backwards’ as he grew up. Adult males have a small patch of red at the back of their necks, whilst the females have no red on their head or neck.
